Healthy Vegan Avocado Sushi Recipe Video

March 5th, 2010

The rolling may take some practice, but of all my healthy vegan recipes, this is my favorite for taking to a pot luck. It travels very easily, and people who have never made it before are impressed. Sea vegetables are an incredibly rich source of minerals, and nori sheets made into sushi are a yummy way to eat this highly nutritious food. Experiment with different fillings, make a variety and have fun sharing them with friends and family!

What foods would be served in a Japanese Cafe?

February 27th, 2010

I have a school assignment that involves creating a business for our area. I’m creating a Japanese styled cafe, since I’d like to see how the blending works out. Obviously I want to serve more things other than coffee, cakes and the like, but what other things are served in Japanese style cafes? Traditional dessert/savory things are ok, but really I’m trying to break away from sushi, sake, noodles that kind of stuff. Thanks ^_^

I just returned from 3 years in Japan so here goes:

Tonkatsu curry- a piece of boneless pork loin coated in panko and deep fried cut into strips and served over sweet-hot Japanese curry and rice.

Potato croquettes (korokke)- mashed potatoes formed into an oval patty, covered in panko and deep fried. Also available in vegetable (yasai) which adds peas and corn to the potato mix.

Milk tea-Royal, apple, and banana are all popular forms of milk tea

Omelet- holy cow do they LOVE omelets, whole restaurants are devoted to them. A huge pile of scrambled egg omelet served over rice with any number of toppings, curry, ketchup, beef, etc

Stuffed buns-large yeast rolls that have fillings like curry or red bean paste

Gyoza- delicious pork and onion dumplings in a thin wrap that are steamed and served with soy sauce and chili oil

Edamame- boiled in salty water for a few minutes and then shocked in cold water, you are given a bowlful to split open and enjoy

Ramen- however obvious it comes with three types of broth salt, miso, or soy

Hope this helps, we loved Japan and would go back in a moment!
